In Laila Lalami's haunting and evocative novel, Yesterday We Were In America, we meet the Saadi family, who have come to the United States from Morocco in search of a better life. The father, Mourad, is a doctor; the mother, Amina, is a nurse; and the children, Adam and Amal, are teenagers.

The Saadis are initially welcomed into their new community, but as the years go by, they begin to feel the sting of discrimination. Mourad is passed over for promotions at work, Amina is subjected to racial slurs at the hospital, and Adam and Amal are bullied at school.

Despite the challenges they face, the Saadis are determined to make a life for themselves in America. They work hard, they save their money, and they try to fit in. But the more they try, the more they realize that they will never truly be accepted as Americans.
