The first Louis L'Amour novel to be adapted for film was Hondo, which was released in 1953. The film starred John Wayne as Hondo Lane, a former cavalry officer who is forced to defend a group of settlers from a band of Apache raiders. Hondo was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to launch Wayne's career as a Western star.

Over the next few decades, several more of L'Amour's novels were adapted for film, including The Sackett Brothers (1970),Valdez Is Coming (1971),and The Quick and the Dead (1985).
