Early Life and Career

Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York City on October 27, 1858. He was the son of a wealthy merchant and philanthropist. Roosevelt's childhood was marked by illness and asthma, but he overcame these challenges to become a strong and athletic young man. He attended Harvard College and Columbia Law School, but he soon decided that he was more interested in politics than in law.

In 1881, Roosevelt was elected to the New York State Assembly. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Republican Party, and in 1895, he was appointed police commissioner of New York City. As police commissioner, Roosevelt cracked down on corruption and vice. He also helped to establish the city's first juvenile court system.

The Spanish-American War

In 1898, the United States declared war on Spain. Roosevelt resigned his position as police commissioner and joined the U.S. Army. He was commissioned as a lieutenant colonel and assigned to the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, also known as the Rough Riders. The Rough Riders were a group of cowboys, ranchers, and other frontiersmen. They were led by Roosevelt and Leonard Wood, another future president.

The Rough Riders fought bravely in the Battle of San Juan Hill. Roosevelt led his men up the hill in a charge that helped to secure a victory for the United States. Roosevelt's heroism in the war made him a national hero. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, and he was promoted to colonel.

Governor of New York

In 1898, Roosevelt was elected governor of New York. He served as governor for two terms, and during that time he pushed through a number of progressive reforms. He established the state's first income tax, he increased regulation of businesses, and he improved the state's labor laws.

President of the United States

In 1901, President William McKinley was assassinated. Roosevelt, who was McKinley's vice president, succeeded him as president. Roosevelt was 42 years old when he became president, making him the youngest president in American history.

Roosevelt was a dynamic and energetic president. He set out to "bust the trusts," and he broke up a number of large corporations that he believed were harming the American people. He also passed laws to protect consumers and workers. Roosevelt was a strong advocate for conservation, and he created five national parks and 51 national forests during his presidency.

In 1904, Roosevelt was re-elected president by a landslide. He continued to pursue his progressive agenda, and he also negotiated the end of the Russo-Japanese War. For his efforts, Roosevelt was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906.

Later Life

Roosevelt left office in 1909. He returned to New York City, where he remained active in politics and in the conservation movement. He also wrote a number of books, including his autobiography, The Autobiography of Theodore Roosevelt.

Roosevelt died in 1919 at the age of 60. He is buried in Oyster Bay, New York. Roosevelt is considered one of the greatest presidents in American history. He was a man of vision and courage, and he left a lasting legacy of progressive reform and environmental protection.
