The Virgin Soldiers is a classic war novel by William Boyd, first published in 1983. The novel follows a group of young British soldiers as they are sent to Northern Ireland in 1970, at the height of the Troubles. The soldiers are ill-prepared for the violence and chaos they encounter, and they quickly become disillusioned with the war.

The novel is narrated by a young officer named Archie MacInnes. Archie is a well-educated and idealistic young man, but he is also naive and inexperienced. He believes in the British Army and in the cause of peace in Northern Ireland. However, his faith is quickly shaken by the violence and brutality he witnesses.

The Virgin Soldiers is a powerful and moving novel that explores the themes of war, innocence, and loss. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the Troubles or in war literature in general.

The Virgin Soldiers Trilogy

The Virgin Soldiers is the first novel in the Virgin Soldiers trilogy. The other two novels in the trilogy are An Ice-Cream War (1982) and Stars and Bars (1984). The trilogy follows the lives of the same group of soldiers as they return to civilian life after the war. The novels explore the long-term effects of the war on the soldiers and their families.
