Motlanthe was born in 1949 in Alexandra, a township outside of Johannesburg. He grew up in a poor family and was exposed to the harsh realities of apartheid from a young age. He became involved in politics as a student at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he joined the ANC Youth League. After graduating, Motlanthe worked as a teacher and a trade union organizer.

In 1977, Motlanthe was arrested and imprisoned for his political activities. He spent six years in prison, during which time he was tortured and subjected to other forms of abuse. Despite these hardships, he remained committed to the struggle against apartheid.

After his release from prison, Motlanthe became a prominent figure in the ANC. He served as the organization's Secretary-General from 1991 to 1997, and as its Deputy President from 1997 to 2008. During this time, he played a key role in the negotiations that led to the end of apartheid and the establishment of a democratic South Africa.

In 2008, Motlanthe was elected President of South Africa following the resignation of Thabo Mbeki. He served in this role until 2009, when he was succeeded by Jacob Zuma. During his presidency, Motlanthe oversaw the country's transition to a new constitution and the establishment of a new government.

Since leaving office, Motlanthe has continued to be active in public life. He is a member of the Elders, a group of global leaders who work to promote peace and human rights. He is also a trustee of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Motlanthe is a respected figure in South Africa and around the world. He is known for his integrity, his commitment to social justice, and his ability to bridge divides. He is a role model for all who believe in the power of peace and reconciliation.
