By Michael J. Miller

In the early 1990s, Microsoft was facing a major challenge. Its flagship operating system, MS-DOS, was showing its age. It was slow, unstable, and incompatible with the latest hardware. Microsoft needed a new operating system, one that could compete with the likes of Unix and OS/2. The company's future depended on it.

In 1990, Microsoft assembled a team of engineers to develop a new operating system, codenamed Windows NT. The team was led by Dave Cutler, a brilliant engineer who had previously worked on VMS, the operating system for DEC's VAX minicomputers. Cutler had a reputation for being a perfectionist, and he demanded the same from his team. The team worked long hours, seven days a week, to create a new operating system that was faster, more stable, and more secure than anything that had come before.

The development of Windows NT was not without its challenges. The team had to overcome technical hurdles, such as how to make the operating system compatible with existing DOS applications. They also had to deal with political challenges, as Microsoft's existing business units were threatened by the new operating system. Despite the challenges, the team persevered, and in 1993, Windows NT was released to the public.

Windows NT was a critical success for Microsoft. It was faster, more stable, and more secure than MS-DOS, and it could run on a wider range of hardware. Windows NT quickly became the operating system of choice for businesses and governments around the world. It also helped to pave the way for the development of Windows 95, the operating system that made Microsoft a household name.

In The Breakneck Race to Create Windows NT, Michael J. Miller tells the inside story of the development of Windows NT. Miller interviewed dozens of key players in the project, providing a unique look at the challenges and triumphs faced by the Microsoft team. The book is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the history of technology and the development of one of the most important operating systems in history.
