About the Author
J.R.R. Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor, best known as the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. His works have been translated into at least 38 languages, and have sold over 150 million copies worldwide.
Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, on January 3, 1892. He was the third child of Arthur Reuel Tolkien, a bank manager, and Mabel Suffield Tolkien. His family moved back to England when Tolkien was three years old. Tolkien attended King Edward's School in Birmingham, where he developed a love of languages and literature. He went on to study English language and literature at Oxford University, where he met his future wife, Edith Mary Bratt.
Tolkien began writing The Hobbit in 1937, as a bedtime story for his children. The book was published in 1937 and was an immediate success. Tolkien began writing The Lord of the Rings in 1938, and it was published in three volumes between 1954 and 1955. The Lord of the Rings has become one of the most popular and influential fantasy novels of all time.
Tolkien died in Bournemouth, England, on September 2, 1973, at the age of 81.
