The book begins with Gamadge being called to the home of Sir John and Lady Mary Askew. Sir John is a wealthy landowner and Lady Mary is a famous author. They tell Gamadge that their prize lion, Leo, has escaped from their estate. They are worried that Leo will harm someone, and they want Gamadge to find him and bring him back.
Gamadge agrees to take the case, and he begins his investigation. He soon learns that Leo is a large and dangerous animal. He is also very intelligent and elusive. Gamadge tracks Leo to a nearby forest, but the lion is too clever for him. Gamadge is forced to call in the help of a lion tamer, who eventually captures Leo and returns him to the Askews.

About the Author
Elizabeth Daly was an American mystery writer. She was born in Wisconsin in 1878 and died in New York City in 1967. She wrote over 20 mystery novels, most of which feature Henry Gamadge. Daly's books are known for their well-developed characters, intricate plots, and witty dialogue.
