The book begins with Gamadge being called to the home of Sir John and Lady Mary Askew. Sir John is a wealthy landowner and Lady Mary is a famous author. They tell Gamadge that their prize lion, Leo, has escaped from their estate. They are worried that Leo will harm someone, and they want Gamadge to find him and bring him back.

Gamadge agrees to take the case, and he begins his investigation. He soon learns that Leo is a large and dangerous animal. He is also very intelligent and elusive.
