In this article, we will explore Suzanne Scotchmer's life and work, and discuss her most important contributions to economics and econometrics. We will also provide links to her most influential publications and offer suggestions for further reading.

Suzanne Scotchmer was born in 1955 in New York City. She received her undergraduate degree from Harvard University in 1977 and her PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1982. After completing her PhD, Scotchmer joined the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley, where she remained for the rest of her career.

Scotchmer's research focused on the economics of intellectual property, innovation, and market design. She made significant contributions to our understanding of how intellectual property rights affect innovation and economic growth. She also developed new econometric methods for studying innovation and market design.

Scotchmer was a highly respected scholar and teacher. She received numerous awards for her work, including the John Bates Clark Medal, the highest honor awarded to an American economist under the age of 40. She was also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Scotchmer passed away in 2014 at the age of 58. She is survived by her husband, economist David Levine, and her two children.

Suzanne Scotchmer made significant contributions to a number of different areas of economics and econometrics. Her most important contributions include:

  • The economics of intellectual property. Scotchmer's work on the economics of intellectual property has helped us to understand how intellectual property rights affect innovation and economic growth. She showed that intellectual property rights can both encourage and discourage innovation, and that the optimal level of intellectual property protection depends on a number of factors, including the nature of the innovation and the market structure.
  • Econometric methods for studying innovation. Scotchmer also developed new econometric methods for studying innovation. These methods allow researchers to measure the impact of innovation on economic growth and to identify the factors that drive innovation.
  • Market design. Scotchmer's work on market design has helped us to understand how to design markets that are efficient and fair. She developed new methods for designing markets for a variety of goods and services, including spectrum auctions, kidney exchanges, and school choice mechanisms.

Scotchmer's work has had a profound impact on the field of economics. Her contributions have helped us to better understand the role of intellectual property in innovation, the factors that drive innovation, and how to design markets that are efficient and fair.

Suzanne Scotchmer published numerous influential articles in leading academic journals. Some of her most influential publications include:

  • "The Patent-Antitrust Interface" (with John P. Walsh)
  • "The Role of Expectations in the Adoption of New Technology"
  • "Econometrics of Innovation"
  • "The Design of Spectrum Auctions"
  • "Kidney Exchanges: A Market Design Perspective"
