Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th President of the United States. He was the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms, from 1885 to 1889 and from 1893 to 1897. Cleveland was a Democrat and a Bourbon Democrat, which meant that he believed in limited government intervention in the economy. He was also a strong supporter of the gold standard and opposed tariffs.

Cleveland's life was a series of ups and downs. He was born in Caldwell, New Jersey, in 1837. His father was a Presbyterian minister and his mother was a devout Christian. Cleveland had a difficult childhood. His father died when he was young, and his mother struggled to make ends meet. Cleveland had to work his way through school, and he often went hungry.

Despite his difficult childhood, Cleveland went on to have a successful legal career. He moved to Buffalo, New York, in 1859 and quickly became one of the city's most prominent lawyers. Cleveland was also active in politics. He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1870 and served as mayor of Buffalo from 1882 to 1884.

In 1884, Cleveland was elected president of the United States. He defeated the Republican candidate, James G. Blaine, in a close election. Cleveland's presidency was a time of great change and upheaval in American history. The country was still recovering from the Civil War and Reconstruction, and the economy was in a state of flux. Cleveland faced a number of challenges during his presidency, including the Panic of 1893, which led to a severe economic depression.

Despite the challenges he faced, Cleveland was a strong and principled leader. He vetoed more bills than any other president in American history, and he stood up for what he believed in. Cleveland was also a compassionate man. He pardoned thousands of Confederate soldiers and worked to improve the lives of Native Americans.

Cleveland left office in 1897, but he remained active in politics. He died in 1908 at the age of 71. Cleveland is remembered as one of the most important presidents in American history. He was a strong and principled leader who served during a time of great change and upheaval.

Legacy

Cleveland's legacy is complex and controversial. He was a strong and principled leader, but he also made some unpopular decisions. Cleveland's veto of the Bland-Allison Act, which would have increased the supply of money in circulation, is often cited as a major factor in the Panic of 1893. Cleveland's opposition to tariffs also alienated many voters.

Despite his unpopular decisions, Cleveland is generally regarded as a good president. He was a strong and principled leader who served during a time of great change and upheaval. Cleveland's legacy is one of both accomplishment and controversy.
